We have all often heard people discussing their skin issues to their peers and these ‘experts’ reply immediately with baseless ‘facts’!

It is very important to establish a difference between fiction and fact. Here we bring you some untrue beliefs along with the factual answers to these myths:

1. Myth: Sunscreens protects your skin all day long.

Truth: Regardless of the fact that sunscreen are the safest means to apply a thin shell onto your the skin to protect it from from sun, do not believe what labels say. No sunscreen can protect skin for the whole day so it should be reapplied after every 80 minutes or less, no matter how high-SPF you are putting on.

2. Myth: Sunscreen lotions can provide a complete sun block.

Truth: People put on sunscreen on a regular basis and still face tanning and patching issues. We need to understand that ultimately, sunscreen is merely a lotion. It gets absorbed by the skin and so no sunscreen can block 100% UV rays. Highest of all, SPF 50-60 can shut out 98% of UV rays. And higher the SPF, the more strong the chemicals used in the product. So decide wisely!

3. Myth: You need not apply sunscreen on cloudy days.

Truth: UV rays are unrelated to weather and they are capable of getting through clouds. UVA can reach your skin through clouds and UVB rays can easily tan your feathers!

4. Myth: Sun is important to meet vitamin D requirement of the body.

Truth: A few minutes of sun exposure is enough to maintain vitamin D level of the body. In other cases, contact doctors rather than tanning yourself.

5. Myth: Skin cancer attacks only fair people.

Truth: Though less common with darker skin, skin cancer can affect all skin types. Melanoma doesn’t differentiate between skin colours!
