An Indian businessman has thrown a mass wedding for more than 200 brides and also gave them gifts worth lacs of rupees to help those poor women to start a new life.
Mahesh Savani, a diamond trader, performed the Hindu ritual of Kanyadan (giving away the bride) for all the 236 fatherless brides from poor families at a mega-wedding event in the western state of Gujarat at Christmas.
Savani believes that giving away brides is a blessing from God.
the diamond trader has been organising similar mass weddings since 2012 and this year two of his sons also got married in the mass wedding ceremony.
“This year my two sons also got married during the mass wedding event. So, in all there were 238 marriages,” said Savani to AFP.
With last Sunday’s mass wedding Savani became a proud father, who has given away over 700 girls to their grooms, added Savani.
The business tycoon also gifted golds and household items like sofa and bed worth Rs 5,00,000 to each of the brides to help them start married life.
Mahesh Savani said that he started this charitable mission in 2008, when one of his employees died just days before his daughter’s marriage.
